2024 NASCAR Chicago Street Race: A look at the field of drivers for the Cup Series and Xfinity Series races (2024)

CHICAGO — This weekend’s Chicago Street Race is the third of five road courses on NASCAR’s 2024 Cup Series and Xfinity Series schedules.

NASCAR made road-course stops at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on March 24 and Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway on June 9. After Chicago, NASCAR has road-course races at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sept. 15 and Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course on Oct. 13.

In Chicago, the Xfinity Series The Loop 110 (50 laps) will run qualifying sessions and the race on Saturday. The Cup Series Grant Park 165 (75 laps) will run qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday.

Defending champions

Both champions from last year’s Chicago Street Race are on this year’s entry lists.

Cole Custer, who won the Xfinity Series race in 2023, is driving the No. 00 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing in this year’s Xfinity Race.

Shane van Gisbergen, who won the Cup Series race in 2023, is on the entry list for both races this year, driving the No. 16 Chevy for Kaulig Racing in the Grant Park 165 and the No. 97 Chevy for Kaulig Racing in The Loop 110.

A road-course specialist from Auckland, New Zealand, van Gisbergen won the Cup Series road-course race at Sonoma on June 9. He sat down for an interview with WGN’s Josh Frydman this week. You can see that in the video below:

William Byron of Charlotte, N.C., won the first Cup Series road-course race of the season, at Circuit of the Americas on March 24. Byron is on the entry list this weekend for the Grant Park 165, in the No. 24 Chevy of Hendrick Motorsports.

Last race

Cup Series drivers will come to to Chicago after a long, rain-delayed race Sunday at Nashville Superspeedway that required a Cup Series-record fifth overtime to decide.

Joey Logano prevailed for his first Cup Series win of 2024.

In the Xfinity Series event at Nashville Superspeedway, held a day before the Cup Series race, John Hunter Nemechek took the checkered flag for his second series win of 2024.

Points standings

Including Sunday’s Grant Park 165, there are seven races left on the 2024 Cup Series regular-season schedule before the playoffs begin on Sept. 8 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The top 16 in the points standings will advance to the Cup Series playoffs. Here are the top 16 going into the Grant Park 165, with wins, poles, top-5 and top-10 finishes (in order) in parentheses:

The 2024 Xfinity Series, meanwhile, has nine regular-season races left, including Saturday’s The Loop 110.

The top 12 in the points standings will advance to the Xfinity Series playoffs, which begin Sept. 28 at Kansas Speedway. Here are the top 12 going into The Loop 110, with wins, poles, top-5 and top-10 finishes (in order) in parentheses:

Local drivers

There are several NASCAR drivers from close to Chicagoland on the entry lists for this weekend’s races, including one from Chicago itself.

That’s Andre Castro, who’s on the entry list for the The Loop 110, driving the No. 14 Chevy for SS GreenLight Racing.

Justin Allgaier, meanwhile, is from Riverton, further south in Illinois, just outside Springfield. He’s on the entry list for The Loop 110 in the No. 7 Chevy for JR Motorsports.

Not too far north over the Wisconsin state line, Sam Mayer of Franklin, which is just southwest of Milwaukee, is on the the entry list for the The Loop 110, driving the No. 1 Chevy for JR Motorsports.

Josh Bilicki of Menomonee Falls, just northwest of Milwaukee, is on the entry list for both races. He’s driving the No. 92 Chevy for DGM Racing in The Loop 110 and the No. 66 Ford for Power Source in the Grant Park 165.

Also on the entry list for the Grant Park 165 are Justin Haley of Winamac in Northwest Indiana, driving the No. 51 Ford for Rick Ware Racing, and Carson Hocevar of Portage in Southwest Michigan, driving the No. 77 for Spire Motorsports.
